Its not news that the current economic crisis is effecting everyone. Savings cut in half, house prices down the drain and jobs threatened. We’re all cutting back. Going out to dinner less, buying store brands, delaying vacations, shopping only for essentials is becoming the new reality for everyone.
But does cutting back mean putting off your dream of building or enlarging your family through adoption? According to “The Adoption Guide” published by Adoptive Families Magazine, the cost of adopting an infant in the U.S. has an average cost of $15,000 to $25,000. Americans are increasingly turning to domestic adoption as International adoptions continue their 4th straight year of decline. According to statistics released in November 2008 by the State Department, adoptions from abroad have dropped more than 30% since 2004.
There isn’t one specific reason for this decline and in fact it varies by country. China and Russia, traditionally the largest sources of adoptees are increasing resources to care for more of their abandoned and orphaned children.
People hoping to adopt from Guatemla will find the United States has issued a ban due to extensive corrupt practices in that country.

As anyone who is trying to adopt domestically in the United States can tell you, it’s a highly competitive and difficult process. In open adoptions especially, part of that competition takes place in adoption agency portfolios, in “Dear Birthmother Letters” or on the Internet in “Dear Birthparent” sites such as AdoptionOnline.com ( www.adoptiononline.com).
A potential Birthparent may view dozens of prospective adoptive parent profiles, but has to decide on which ones to learn about in depth. While you can think of this process in many ways, one useful analogy is that of a sales pitch. The key to a successful pitch is getting your foot in the door so that the client (Birthparent) will choose to learn more about the product (the prospective adoptive family). Thinking about it in this way, may help you to more carefully construct your portfolio.
